About me

Photo of Barry Steer at Work station

For over 30 years I worked in secondary education as a Drama, Media and English teacher during which time I produced, directed and wrote many plays for young people as well as taking drama into primary schools, organising and participating in interschool events including an international mime and mask festival. I have taught mask making and use in school, for adults and professionally.

I started teaching Media and Film in 1985 and have organised film making in school and for the community extensively since, including films for St Peter and St James Hospice, Burnside Centre for Adults with Learning Difficulties and Brighton Benefits Campaign. Recently I have been building websites.

For 3 years I worked in Italy as a freelance teacher, translator and interpreter. In addition to Italian I also speak some French.

I trained in Educational Drama at Goldsmiths College and continued at the Central School of Speech and Drama. I have extended my skills working with such diverse practitioners as Augusto Boal and the Lindsay Kemp Co. I learnt mask and mime at The City Lit and mask making initially with Trickster Co. I learned web design initially at Brighton City College.

I have made two chapter contributions to ‘Drama Strategies’ published by Heinneman.
